When was the Bengals last Super Bowl?

Bengals Super Bowl history

Before Super Bowl LVI the Bengals last played in the Super Bowl’s XVI and XXIII both against the San Francisco 49ers.

In the 1981 season, before playing the 49ers they defeated the Buffalo Bills and the San Diego Chargers.

They would lose this game in 26-21 after being down 20-0 at halftime.

In the 1988 season, the Bengals played the 49ers in the Super Bowl for the last time. To get to the Super Bowl, they defeated the Seattle Seahawks and the Bills once again.

The score at halftime was a 3-3 tie. The Bengals took the lead in the third quarter thanks to a 93-yard kickoff return touchdown by Stanford Jennings. Nonetheless, Joe Montana led two touchdown drives, the last culminating in the game-winning touchdown with 39 seconds left on the clock.

When did the Bengals play in the Super Bowl?

What year were the Cincinnati Bengals Super Bowl appearances, and how did they fare? How successful were they in prior appearances to Super Bowl 56?

Consider the Bengals’ history of Super Bowl appearances, including Bengals Super Bowl wins (or lack thereof) who they’ve played, and how those games went.

Super Bowl appearances by the Cincinnati Bengals:

  • January 24, 1982: Super Bowl XVI
  • Super Bowl XXIII: January 22, 1989
  • The LVI Super Bowl: February 13, 2022

Let’s take a closer look at these momentous appearances by the Bengals.

When did the Bengals win the Super Bowl?

To put it simply, not once. Since joining the NFL in 1968 as an AFL team, the team has never won the Super Bowl. As a matter of fact, this is a team that rarely makes the playoffs.

Results of Super Bowl XVI: San Francisco 49ers 26, Cincinnati Bengals 21

In the 1981 season, the Bengals made their first trip to the Super Bowl. After finishing the regular season with a 12-4 record, Cincinnati dominated the AFC Central and earned the top spot. They won the divisional round against the Buffalo Bills and then the conference championship against the San Diego Chargers.

Unfortunately, the Bengals’ game-day preparations did not translate to success. Playing in their first Super Bowl, they fell behind 20-0 at halftime. The Bengals put up a valiant fight in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 20-14, but they were never able to seize the lead. The final margin of victory for the 49ers was 26-21, thanks to two more field goals from Ray Wersching.

Super Bowl XXIII: 49ers 20, Bengals 16

Both Bengals Super Bowl appearances were symmetrical. In 1989, they went 12-4, won the AFC Central Division, and were ranked No. 1. After beating the Seahawks and Bills, they reached Super Bowl XXIII in Miami.

Despite the same opponent, this Super Bowl was different. During halftime, the game tied at 3-3. Stanford Jennings won the game with a 93-yard kickoff return touchdown. The Bengals led 16-13 in the fourth quarter, but Joe Montana’s touchdown pass to John Taylor with 34 seconds left gave the 49ers the win.

Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23–20 in the Super Bowl LVI

After scoring 10 consecutive points right after halftime, the Bengals appeared to have taken control of the game. The Rams, though, scored a late touchdown to secure a 23-20 triumph. After the Rams halted the Bengals’ final drive, the Rams’ offense took a knee in victory formation to seal the victory.

Can you tell me how many Super Bowls the Bengals have won?

The Bengals have a long history of wins but no Super Bowl victories. To what extent have the Bengals been successful in the Super Bowl? After losing Super Bowl 56, the Bengals’ record dropped to 0-3.

Super Bowl opponents the Bengals have faced in the past

When the Bengals played the Ram’s in Super Bowl 56, it was the first time in franchise history that they have played someone besides the 49ers. Interestingly, the Bengals’ only Super Bowl opponents have come from the NFC West.

Playoff appearances by the Bengals

It wasn’t until 1968 that the Cincinnati Bengals kicked off their inaugural season. Their second year in the playoffs ended in a 17-0 loss to the Baltimore Colts. They returned three years later but were eliminated by the Miami Dolphins (34-16) in the first round. Once again, in 1975, the squad faced elimination in the first round, this time after a 31-28 loss to the Oakland Raiders.

After the 1981 season, the team rallied and traveled to the Pontiac Silverdome to participate in the Super Bowl. The Bengals defeated the Buffalo Bills 28-21 and the San Diego Chargers 27-7 to meet the 49ers in the Super Bowl.

Seven years later: Meeting the 49ers for a rematch

A year later, Cincinnati was back in the playoffs, but they were eliminated by the New York Jets 44-17 in the wild-card round.

The Bengals had to wait six years before returning to the postseason. The rematch in the Super Bowl against the 49ers was pivotal, however. They were down 20-16 heading into the closing minutes but ultimately fell short. The Bengals picked up 21-13 and 21-10 victories over the Seattle Seahawks and Buffalo Bills, respectively, on the road.

Their last postseason victory was in the 1990 campaign and wouldn’t happen again until the 2021-22 season. Despite a 41-14 victory over the Houston Oilers in the wild-card round, the team faced elimination again. This time by the Los Angeles Raiders (20-10).

Afterward, the Bengals reached the postseason in 2005, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Each time they made it to the tournament proper, they were eliminated in the wild-card round.

When quarterback Joe Burrow led his club to the Super Bowl in 2021, they finally broke their long championship drought. The Bengals started out by beating the Raiders in Las Vegas, and then they shocked the Titans by winning 19-16 despite being the underdogs in most bookmakers in the country.
